Dye Garden

The Dye Garden is the foundation of our Art Program, where we cultivate pigments for outdoor art classes and workshops. We grow black hollyhock, indigo, madder root, marigold, coreopsis, dyers chamomile, sulfur cosmos, cota, and black pincushion, as well as food plants that can be used for dyes and supportive plants.

Coreopsis, Black Hollyhock

We use our Black Hollyhock or Black Knight Scabiosa harvest to make a surprising periwinkle color and bright orange hues from Coreopsis using a dye bath process. Learn to create repeat patterns on fabrics with shibori techniques!

Fresh Indigo

Create beautiful, locally sourced sky-blue hues using fresh indigo dye, a process that uses leaves direct from the indigo plant.

Madder Root

This European plant has been used consistently since the middle ages. Learn the techniques for developing a madder root dye bath to create deep reds and lighter hues of coral and orange.
